Harper gives Quebecers a federalist alternative

January 10, 2006

MONTREAL – Tonight during the last leaders’ debate of the campaign, Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper once again gave Quebecers a positive vision and an alternative to the Liberals and Bloc.

“For the people of Quebec watching us tonight, you have an alternative to a corrupt party and endless opposition,” said Mr. Harper. “Conservatives want to represent you in a new government, a government that will represent you and your families.”

Mr. Harper presented a new vision for the country, to Quebecers and to all Francophone Canadians. He stated that a new Conservative government will pass the Federal Accountability Act, cut the GST, crack down on crime, provide choice in child care, and establish a Patients Wait Times Guarantee.

Paul Martin on the other hand was again defenceless when it came to trying to explain away his many flip flops on issues such as cutting the GST, mandatory minimum sentences, and the Chinese head tax. Mr. Martin was unable to offer a vision for the country or convince Canadians that his government would even be able to work on the priorities of the country.

“In the past couple of weeks, two new police investigations into the Liberal government have come to light,” said Mr. Harper. “Clearly another Liberal government will be bogged down in police investigations and public inquiries at the expense of working on the issues affecting all Canadians."

On January 23rd, Canada faces a clear choice between stagnation and vision, between old and new, between entitlement and accountability, and between benefits for some Canadians and benefits for all Canadians.
