NEWS RELEASE
BREITKREUZ
STANDS UP FOR OUR SENIORS YORKTON – Garry Breitkreuz, Conservative Party Candidate for the riding of Yorkton-Melville, reiterated, Tuesday, the significance of a policy announcement regarding seniors made one month ago by the Conservative Party. “Our senior citizens have not been treated well by the government,” said Breitkreuz. “The Liberal finance department have been focused on finding ways to tax seniors, belittle their concerns and leak information about their investments. The Liberals can’t see just how hard it is for the average Canadian senior to live off a pension.” On Dec. 9, 2005, Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper and Senior’s Critic Dean Allison announced a plan to safeguard seniors’ retirement income. “Our commitment is to double the deduction for private pension and RRSP income immediately to $2,000 and further increase it to $2,500 over five years,” said Breitkreuz. “Seniors who sacrificed to save for their retirement and paid into pension plans should get a tax break. “Seniors who are trying to get information about pensions or other government programs must be treated with the respect and courtesy they deserve,” said Breitkreuz. “To ensure that there is accountability for seniors, and to ensure that seniors are treated well and have a voice in government policy decisions, we will appoint a national Seniors’ Council. This Council will insure that government officials treat them well. The Seniors’ Council will be made up of representatives of national seniors organizations and individual seniors. In addition to monitoring the quality of government services to seniors, it will provide advice to the Minister Responsible for Seniors. -
