MISSING MINISTERS FAVOUR HIGHER GAS PRICES? OTTAWA – Official Opposition Natural Resources Critic John Duncan questioned the federal government’s commitment to address the issue of gas prices one day before an emergency Parliamentary committee meeting on the issue. “Conservative Members of Parliament have flown across the country to attend the meeting but no Liberal cabinet member decided it was worth showing up for,” said Duncan. “I think Canadians who have faced record high gas prices over the summer will be shocked that Liberal cabinet members who should be addressing this issue have declined to attend this meeting,” said Duncan. “The Conservative party wants lower gasoline prices and would lower gasoline taxes directly benefiting the consumer. The Liberal government appears to be happy to be collecting windfall gas tax revenue and in fact want prices higher,” said Duncan. “Environment Minister Stephane Dion has actually said high gas prices are good for Canada while other ministers have urged Canadians to get used to the high cost of gas. Liberal MP Mark Holland said in the Toronto Star the other day that the worst thing the government could do would be to cut gas taxes and that Canadians have to ‘come to grips with reality,’” said Duncan. “Canadian’s
need real leadership in government that would take this issue serious,
return Canadians money and cut taxes at the pump,” said Duncan. - 30 - |
