Ruling brings cautious optimism (OTTAWA) - The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is pleased with last night’s ruling by a U.S. appeals court to overturn the temporary injunction against the United States Department of Agriculture regulation opening the border to Canadian cattle. “This is another positive step on the road to normalizing cattle and ruminant trade in North America. The ruling lifts some of the burden from our producers, and will benefit both our countries,” said Bob Friesen, CFA President. “This is further recognition of and support for the science-based approach that has been taken by both Canada and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.” There is some cause for caution as there will be a further court hearing on July 27 where a U.S. District Court will consider an application to impose a permanent injunction. However CFA remains optimistic that yesterday’s ruling will help ensure future rulings are based on good science. “We have cleared one hurdle. There are still a few more in front of us, but I know we will overcome them,” said Friesen. “I want to thank the Canadian and U.S. government officials, and industry groups like the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, who have worked so hard on this issue.” -30- (Authored and distributed by the Canadian
