News Release APAS Disappointed with MP turnout at Midterm Meeting The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan is disappointed that only one MP is attending its Midterm Meeting. APAS had invited all 14 of the Saskatchewan MPs to attend and participate in the meeting, but many cannot attend because of their Rural Caucus meeting in Regina. The APAS Midterm Meeting will be held from Wednesday, July 19th to Thursday, July 20th at the St. Mary’s Cultural Centre in Yorkton. RM members will gather to discuss agricultural policy issues and lobbying strategies. They will discuss concerns and solutions to Agricultural issues affecting Saskatchewan producers. Also, there will be a guest speaker to discuss the innovation behind biofuel in Saskatchewan, and the Co-Chair of the Farm Leaders Advisory Group (FLAG) will also be speaking. “It is important that MPs in this province understand Canadian agriculture policy issues from a Saskatchewan perspective,” said Ken McBride, President of APAS. “Our meeting gives MPs an opportunity to connect with RM members and producers to further understand their needs, so it is disappointing that the government MPs will not be attending.” “However, we understand that the Rural Caucus meeting collides with our meeting and it is important that MPs take part in that, as well,” he said. APAS will be making a presentation at the Rural Caucus meeting in Regina. APAS will extend the invitation for Saskatchewan MPs to participate its Annual General Meeting, which will be held from November 30th to December 1st of this year. Despite the poor turnout of MPs, McBride says that APAS looks forward to discussion with the Honourable Ralph Goodale, an urban municipality representative who will be attending the meeting. APAS is a grassroots organization designed to provide farmers, ranchers, and producers with a democratically elected, non-partisan producer group that can lobby for policy change. -30- |
