PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS OF CANADA

IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED CITIZENS OF CANADA, draw the attention of the House to the following:

THAT Statistics Canada recently reported 106,658 unborn children had their lives terminated in Canadian hospitals and clinics in 1995 - a record high number of abortions for one year;

THAT many thousands of these abortions are "medically unnecessary" and actually increase health risks for women undergoing this procedure;

THAT tax funding for any medically unnecessary procedure or any medical procedure which increases health risks of the patient violates the primary objective of the Canada Health Act;

THAT Canada is in violation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which guarantees "appropriate legal protection" for the child "before as well as after birth;"

THAT public opinion polls and plebiscites consistently show that Canadians do not support tax-funded abortions;

THEREFORE, your petitioners request Parliament support a Motion introduced by the Member of Parliament for Yorkton-Melville which states: "That, in the opinion of this House, the government should bring in legislation in accordance with provisions of the Referendum Act, 1992 which would require a binding, national referendum be held at the time of the next election to ask voters whether or not they are in favour of government funding for medically unnecessary abortions."
